Triumph Motorcycles was founded in 1902 by German engineer Siegfried Bettmann in Coventry, England. Bettmann had previously designed bicycles for Rover, adding a small engine to make a motorcycle. In the early years, Triumph only sold motorcycles with various modest designs. During World War I, Triumph developed and supplied over 30,000 motorcycles for military use.
After the war ended in 1918, the company began producing civilian models such as the Tiger and continued to grow its presence in Europe. By the 1950s, Triumph had become well known and even released innovative models such as the 3TA (Triumph Three); it remains one of the most popular models today. In 1983, John Bloor purchased all of Triumph's stock and quickly reorganized and modernized manufacturing facilities to produce high-performance motorcycles. Since then, Triumph has gone on to become one of the world’s leading premium motorcycle brands renowned for design classics like their Bonneville series.
