The history of Maine State Parks dates back to the late 1800s when efforts were made to preserve the state's wild lands and natural beauty. Since then, Maine has experienced a steady growth in park funding and involvement. The first three state parks were built in 1918, with additional parks added over the years as a result of environmental conservation initiatives.

The 1960s saw an increase in park fees, camping fees, and entrance fees for vehicles, which helped to fund more construction projects and improvements to existing parks. Today, Maine boasts more than 40 state parks with a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages.
