The Peterbilt brand first came to life in 1939 when two truckers decided to merge their existing businesses under one name. TEM Cowles purchased Ball & Miller Truck Line while George Schoner formed Schoner Welding Works. Together they would be known as Pacific Car and Foundry Co., later renamed Peterbilt Motors Company (PMC).
